"Bold on the outside and caring to the core"
When I was first approached by the fabulous Nicola Bonn from Outspoken Beauty podcast regarding a pre-launch trial she was doing on Avon’s new & revolutionary Hydramatic Matte lipstick, I was instantly intrigued. A new matte lipstick that finally provides a high colour payoff, whilst hydrating and plumping your lips (versus the usual drying them out into wee prunes!) – now that would be a world's first!
So, needless to say, I was quick to reply and say ‘Yes please, Nicola!’
I was also very honoured to be invited onto the podcast to give my opinion on this lipstick, and you’ll get to hear this interview later in this post!
Although, there are lots of lipsticks on the market with infused Hyaluronic Acid, I hadn't seen any matte formulation lipsticks with the hydrating Hyaluronic Acid core.
Cover Girl in the US has a lipstick with the Hyaluronic Acid core - but it’s not a matte lipstick, which is the tricky bit of this Hydramatic Matte lipstick formulation.
And funnily enough, Cover Girl was my wee baby back in the day, when I worked as its colour expert & formulator, whilst working in Procter & Gamble!
So please read on for some exciting findings about Avon's Hydramatic matte lipstick!
When My Avon Hydramatic Matte lipstick arrived...
When the lipstick arrived, I was delighted to see that I’d been sent one of my favourite lip colours – a stunning true red, which is their ‘Siren Red’ shade. The next thing that I was intrigued to see was the rather distinctive pale pink central core – which contains the skincare ingredients, Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin. And at first I did wonder how this was going to apply – 'Would it be patchy due to the core and additional creamy moisture it offered?'... |
Lipstick Application:
Well, on the very first swipe, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not in any way patchy (given it having the pale pink Hyaluronic Acid core), and in fact the colour payoff and coverage was amazing - just like a matte lipstick should be.
And oh my word, the creamy buttery texture was gorgeous, making it glide so easily onto the lips, with not the slightest bit of drag, which you normally get with a matte lipstick. There was absolutely no need to pick up my lip brush to get it off the bullet and onto the lips. The coverage and vibrancy is fantastic – just one or two swipes onto the lips is enough to get a beautiful wash and coverage on the lips.
The matte finish isn’t too dry looking either, so it gives a nice healthy, fresh look to the lips - as you’ll see in the below image.
The ‘Siren Red’ shade is such a stunning true red colour, with a slight blue undertone, that would work well with most skin tones and looked really pretty against my fair skin tone.
The scent is really yummy too!
Lipstick Longevity:
As I was applying, my next thought was – ‘Will this last as long as a matte lipstick?’ Due to its creaminess (with more than 50% hydrating and skin-protecting ingredients), I was a bit of a doubting Thomas, and did think it wouldn’t last as long.
So I went on to test it against some of my favourite higher end matte lipsticks in my kit, and was very pleasantly surprised with the results…
Avon Hydramatic Matte Lipstick versus Mac Cosmetics ‘Ruby Woo’ Retro Matte lipstick:
Mac Cosmetics ‘Ruby Woo’ is such an iconic matte lipstick, and is one of mine, and my clients’, all time red lippy favs. So, I was interested to see how the Avon Hydramatic lipstick would stack up against it.
When first applied, it was really obvious that the Avon ‘Siren Red’ is very similar in shade and tone to the Mac Cosmetics ‘Ruby Woo’ (see the image below). Both had similar coverage (‘Ruby Woo’ had perhaps slightly more), but the Avon ‘Siren Red’ applied much more easily and smoothly.
Here’s what I found after testing them both on my lips (Avon on the left and Mac on the right), over a period of 6 hours:
The image below demonstrates what they both looked like on the lips across the day, with no touch-ups.
Mac Cosmetics ‘Ruby Woo’ dried down quickly with very little smudging, whilst the Avon ‘Siren Red’ took a little longer and was prone to a little more smudging. After 4 hours, both are wearing quite well, though losing their vibrancy. Avon ‘Siren Red’ lip area felt smoother, more moisturised and was wearing off gradually without any patchiness or dry bits. Mac ‘Ruby Woo’, on the other hand, didn’t feel as smooth (though not too dry either), but wasn’t wearing off quite as well and started to look a little patchy, particularly on the lower lip area. After 6 hours, both still lasted well with a nice hint of colour, and looked quite similar to the 4hr stage. Lips felt a little more hydrated & soft on the Avon side. |

There are 15 beautiful shades in the range, ranging from nudes right through to your plums and berries. With a shade for every skin tone from fair to dark complexions.

Avon have cleverly created a matching range of lip pencils, and listed which one matches which Hydramatic matte lipstick – making it super easy for the customer to pick the right shade. Love that!

Outspoken Beauty Podcast Interview:
You can hear me talk about this fabulous lipstick on one of my absolute favourite beauty podcasts - Outspoken Beauty (hint – I’m about 5mins from the end!). It’s worth listening to the entire episode – as you’ll hear Holly Roberts from Avon talking about the science behind this fantastic lipstick. She also talks about how their research with 9,000 women led them to creating this world first formulation. They were questioned about their concerns and what they would love in their perfect matte lipstick. And the result was the birth of the very clever Hydramatic matte lipstick!
Nicola also chats with Strictly Come Dancing’s celebrity makeup up artist, Bryony Blake, who also loves this lipstick.
So for this podcast episode (Why the Right Lipstick Matt-ers’), you can listen here.
My Final Thoughts:
Overall, Avon Hydramatic Matte Lipstick performed very well against the Mac ‘Ruby Woo’, and was just prone to a little more smudging. But with lip liner (such as Avon’s matching Glimmerstick lip liner ‘True Red’) and blotting with some tissue, this minor issue would be rectified easily.
With this lipstick, you get the look of a pigmented matte lipstick, but is also hydrating and very comfortable to wear. Something you don’t normally get with a matte lipstick.
The Siren Red is just a stunning shade, and love how fresh it makes my fair complexion look. Received lots of compliments when wearing it, and is a fabulous evening/party/Valentines /Christmas/anytime shade!
So, as you may have gathered, I would highly recommend this revolutionary new matte lipstick! It's now a firm staple in my kit moving forward - am totally in love with it!
And, am looking forward to trying out the other beautiful shades, which I've ordered and eagerly await!
It's such great quality for an extremely reasonable price - like a lot of Avon products. And, in the current economic climate, is worth checking out, for not just this lipstick, but their cosmetics and skincare in general.
Interested to hear your thoughts, or if you’ve tried this lipstick – what did you think of it? Which shade is your favourite? Please feel free to let me know in the Comments below - I'd really love to hear your thoughts 👇
And if you haven’t tried it yet, it’s selling for just £8rrp (introductory price) – and even at the full price of £10rrp, this lipstick is an absolute steal!
So, would highly recommend snapping yours up! And for this great price, why not go for a shade that you know you’ll love and maybe also getting a second one that’s a bit riskier for you and out of your comfort zone – at this price it’s worth the risk. And you never know, you may find a whole new you for just £8! 😊
